DON DON DONKI’s ridiculously long list of Japanese discounted items will keep you so busy, you might just find yourself shopping until daybreak. 

Hunting for goodies here is all sorts of fun, especially if you’re looking for “unusual” grocery stuff. You’ll find curry-flavored toothpaste, blue-colored juice, nose hair remover, giant tuna head—you get the idea.

A friendly piece of advice: most item descriptions come in Japanese text. You can scan their barcodes using the machines provided around the store to at least get a rough translation.

How to Get to Orchard Road

You can get to Orchard Road via transit by taking either the North-South Line (NSL) or the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL). Both lines link to the Orchard MRT Station. 

Orchard station has a total of 13 exits branching out from both NSL and TEL, providing multiple access points to the retail boulevard and its malls. 

Determining what exit to use depends on where your target Orchard Road destination is. But for convenient and shaded walking, we recommend taking exits that are directly linked to the malls.

Alternatively, you can exit at street level and get around the whole of Orchard Road by foot, bus, or taxi.

Another train stop, the Dhoby Gaut Station, serves as an interchange for the NSL and North-East Line (NEL). If you’re taking the NEL, ensure that you’ll get off the station (Orchard Road is just a few steps away from Dhoby Gaut).

What bus goes to Orchard Road?

Buses that drop off passengers on stops near Orchard Road include the Park Hotel Alexandria Shuttle, Big Bus Tours Yellow Line, Funvee City Hopper, and Buses 36, 77, 124, 143, 162, 167, 174, 190, 518, 972, 190A, 518A, 972A, 36B. 174E, 162M, and 972M.

Meanwhile, bus stations near and within Orchard Road that you can hop on for exploring the boulevard or accessing other stops include Grand Park Orchard, Centrepoint, Ngee Ann City, Mount Elizabeth Hospital, Grange Road, and Kramat Lane.

There are also bus stops at Bef Cairnhill Road, Lucky Plaza, Somerset Station, and Orchard Plaza. 

Getting around Orchard Road

You can get around Orchard Road by walking, taking the bus, or hailing a taxi. For bus and taxi riders, multiple bays in malls and along the road are available for pick up and drop off.

If you’re staying near the precinct, renting or riding a bike is also effective for exploring, not to mention it’s convenient and healthy.

Why is Orchard Road called Orchard Road?

Orchard Road is called Orchard Road due to the area being an orchard and nutmeg plantation in the 1830s. 

The nutmeg plantations in the area failed to grow following a series of mishaps from the collapse of global nutmeg prices to pests and flooding. Only a few plantations remained by 1860, ushering in a new period of residential and commercial developments.

The 1900s saw Orchard Road rise from a plantation to a commercial center. Key milestones include the establishment of Cold Storage in 1905, C.K. Tang Department Store in 1958, and the Mandarin Hotel in 1973.

Further developments occurred between the late 1980s and early 1990s when the Orchard, Somerset, and Dhoby Gaut MRT stations and the Ngee Ann City were built in the area.
