Top 5 Insurance Companies in Singapore

Coverage

We picked insurance companies that offer a wide range of products to cater to clients’ various personal and business needs.

We also looked into the benefits provided in each insurance package, giving additional points to reasonably priced and well-thought-out policies.

Reputation

We selected companies with substantial industry experience and credentials. We also looked into their past business partners and the impact they left on clients.

Financial strength

Our list includes companies with stable financial status. We also considered if they have a promising business outlook several years from now.

Customer service

We picked insurance providers that we can easily do business with, looking into their responsiveness, helpfulness, and claims system.

The latter factor is to gauge how easy it is for clients to process claims, especially during emergencies.

Pros

  • Affordable premiums
  • Easy-to-use online portals
  • Plenty of products to choose from
  • Consistent promos

Cons

  • Claims process may take more than 2 weeks
  • Occasional lack of response from customer desk

We love it when an insurance company charges reasonably priced premiums for good coverages, like how they do at FWD Insurance.

One of the most popular products of this company is its travel insurance, which is divided into three tiers to accommodate more budget levels.

Aside from being affordable, we find the benefits sufficient, too. These include the essentials: overseas medical expenses, theft or damage to personal belongings, baggage delay, and travel delay, among others.

The payout limits are quite decent, too, especially for the medical expenses with a limit reaching $1 million.

We are also impressed with how the company utilizes technology to streamline its online services. For instance, clients can preview quotes and buy a policy with just a few clicks on its website.

However, processing one’s claims might not go as smoothly. Reports from some claimants we talked to mentioned instances when the portal is down and the customer desk is unresponsive, resulting in delayed payouts.

That said, we think FWD Insurance should work on being consistent with its claims system, given that it wants to use modern technology to make things easier for its clients.

Pros

  • Highly competent consultants
  • Also offers corporate insurance
  • Usually responsive

Cons

  • Filling out quote request form can be tedious
  • Potential communication hiccups

Many of the clients we’ve spoken with have only good things to say about Assure General Insurance (AGI) Singapore, and we can understand why.

The company is teeming with helpful and knowledgeable consultants who know how to do their jobs, leaving clients confident about their purchasing decisions.

And we think the team must indeed be competent, as AGI offers both personal and business insurance policies. The latter is more complex, thus a reliable consultant is much needed.

AGI appears to have perfected the art and science of motor insurance policies with many of its clients being satisfied with the premium prices and claiming process.

It’s a hassle that we can’t get the quotes right away, though. We needed to provide details on a form first (including our registered vehicle information) to request a quote.

The good thing is that an actual human being reaches out to us to explain the quote and the company’s packages.

Note that there’s a risk that the customer desk might overlook your request, so prepare some patience waiting for a call, or call them instead.

Pros

  • Reliable advisors
  • Usually responsive
  • Partners with financially stable insurance providers

Cons

  • Relatively young
  • Not for clients with strong insurance company preferences

Some clients might prefer working with an insurance brokerage company, which is understandable since such services are often connected with financially stable insurance providers.

Raffles Provident is one such broker. The company stood out for us because its founder, Andrew Ang, pursues innovation.

One thing that truly caught our attention is the company’s cyber insurance policy that aims to financially support businesses in the case of damages from data breaches.

This product shows how the company looks toward the future of business and the evolving risks that come with it.

Raffles Provident’s team is also competent and would recommend the policies that best suits your budget and needs.

We think this setup is easier for clients who want more advice on what product to purchase and have no time to research each policy.

The probable downside is that some clients might not prefer the company’s partners SOMPO Insurance and AIG Insurance, hence making them reluctant to purchase.

If you’re buying a product, know also that the online form (which uses Google Forms) can be tedious to fill out.

4. SONA Insurance

Pros

  • Consistent efficiency
  • Transparent charges
  • Knowledgeable agents

Cons

  • No at-a-glance product information
  • Occasional delays in responses

SONA Insurance impresses us with its consistent performance in more than 10 years.

Of particular note is its private and commercial auto insurance coverages that satisfy many clients.

Several of them we’ve talked to are long-time customers and said they stick to SONA due to the reasonable prices and efficient agents.

We also love that the company is transparent with its fees. We often worry about insurance providers surprising us with hidden fees, so this one is a relief.

We think that the company is lacking in informational materials, though. It might help to include an overview of each insurance product to help prospective clients decide whether to contact the provider or not.

There also might be instances when the response to your quote request is delayed due to the form not working.

5. Multi-Lines Agencies

Pros

  • Senior industry player
  • Plenty of niche policies
  • Helpful agents

Cons

  • No health insurance
  • Not at-a-glance policy information

Multi-Lines Agencies is an insurance company-slash-broker that has been operating in Singapore for about 30 years now, making it one of the most reliable agencies here in company reputation alone.

We like most the agency’s diverse selection of products that go beyond the usual home and business insurance policies.

Our favorites include golfer’s insurance and credit card fraud for personal policies and war risk insurance for corporate policies, specifically relating to the protection of commercial vessels.

We like these policies because these are niche coverages that are difficult to find elsewhere.

The downside is that we don’t see right away which insurance carriers are partners with Multi-Lines (apart from AIG). Perhaps a page showing an overview of providers working with them can boost trust.

We can’t also name the company a one-stop shop yet since it doesn’t offer health insurance policies. That said, clients who want to streamline their insurance access will need to find an agency with wider coverage.
